British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
